Health activism, Creative Practice and Medical Humanities: onco-creations, rehearsing cancer justice

Wednesday/Miércoles November 16, 2022 at 12 pm (California)- 3 pm (Nueva York)- 8 pm GMT-- (21:00 Peninsula/Spain)

What would happen if we treat cancer as an art inquiry instead of a biomedical certainty?

How (else) might we open the kinds of bodies, coalitions and practices of oncological care and justice possible by engaging in playful not-yet-knowing together? What if we co-create new cancer stories and move healing beyond individual battles?

As part of the Healing/Arts Symposium, I will offer an online talk/workshop onco-creations. I will share some core principles of the onco-creative practice, some thoughts on cancer justice, and one or two improvisation practices to rehearsse cancer together. This workshop is for health and social justice activists, medical workers, art/facilitators, and anyone and everyone who feels impacted by the bio-socio-cultural pains of cancer and wants justice.

A snippet into what an onco-creative process can do, in this two hour (online) workshop we will play with bodily practices, imaginations, and creative movements to open up new kinds of possible cancer relations. Moving and sensing together, we will experiment with improvisation scores, bodily attuning, and training new (cancer) sensibilities; a rehearsal for new modes of co-creating cancer relations. As a frame for our exploration, we will gather around the question: How can we protect our daughters? In times of environmental crisis, chronic inequalities, and profit-making running the MIC (Medical Industrial Complex), this inquiry invite us to co-create as a visionary medicine: speculating with oncological time, health justice, and healing as a more-than-one effort.

Situated at the crossroads of experimental dance, Health Activism and Community Art, and drawing on the decade long experience of creating performance pieces with the project oncogrrrls (Spain/Mexico/US), this hybrid-movement-workshop-as-political-laboratory – is an invitation for health workers, artists, activists, and people living with cancer (don’t we all?) who care for cancer as a social justice issue.

Practical Notes:

Bring a Stone: rock/stones are earthly beings formed by forces and times beyond human comprehension. They bear witness and hold changes. Bring one that calls to you in the next few days.

* Previous Dance or art/somatics experience is not necessary. Be ready to move around your space, bring comfortable clothes, a stone, and paper you can sketch in. A matt and blanket can help you be more comfortable, but it is not necessary. Movement explorations can be adjusted to any range of motions and spaces. You will need to have access to a computer (preferably with camera) and internet. I have planned a mostly ‘orally’ led workshop, if you need English (or any other language) captions, please make note in the accomodations section of the event registration form at least two weeks in advance so I can plan accordingly.
